The stag held special significance for Ernst Hüther. Several of his businesses featured the stately animal in their names. Examples include the former "Roter Hirsch" (Red Stag) hotel on the Saalfeld market square, the "Bahn-Hirsch" (Railway Stag) at the Saalfeld train station, the "Wald-Hirsch" (Forest Stag) in Eyba, and the "Post-Hirsch" (Post Stag) in Pößneck.
It is therefore not surprising that he commissioned the sculptor Arno Oswald Zauche - who also created the ducks for the fountain in the villa’s ornamental courtyard - to design this magnificent stag statue.
Zauche was not only a sculptor but also worked as a porcelain artist, for instance for the Schwarzburg Workshops.
In the past, a path branching off here - leading above the villa between the ornamental courtyard and the linden tree avenue - provided access to a deer enclosure. It was situated behind the tennis court and extended almost as far as the Turmlaube (tower pavilion). However, the herd did not remain in Bergfried Park for long; the enclosure no longer appears on plans dating from 1940.

A proud animal, wouldn't you agree? How noble a stag looks when it moves! You can see that in the deer park behind the tennis court. This powerful animal has really captured the Doctor's heart: it is his emblem and features in the names of his "Mauxion-Hirsch" inns in Saalfeld and Pößneck - the Red Stag, the Car Stag, the Railway Stag, the Forest Stag, the Post Stag, and the Sports Stag; there is even a "Stag Nursery" back by the little Wetzelstein manor.
But the Doctor's favorite animals are his dogs: French Bulldogs and Pekingese. At first, the kennels were located in the service courtyard. But when the Doctor and his wife eventually acquired five automobiles, they needed the kennels for garages. The dogs then moved over here - right across the path, there is plenty of room for their quarters and the kitchen where their food is prepared. Even those that have passed away remain here: a cross by the fence in the dog cemetery serves as a memorial to each little rascal.
I was just planting fresh flowers there the other day when I heard a commotion behind me. I turned around and saw - I couldn't believe my eyes! - the Doctor hauling a large handcart up the winding path. All by himself! And surrounded by a crowd of people cheering him on. I was about to rush to the Doctor's aid when he said, "Never mind, Paul, I have to do this alone, or I'll lose the bet!" As it turned out, the factory owner Mr. Schaede and the Doctor had once again been sitting together for a game of Skat at "The Hole" - one of the Doctor's inns. One beer led to another, and one word to the next, and that’s how the washing machine bet came about. It was a wager involving two of the latest "Elektra" model washing machines from the factory of Mr. Schaede, who is a frequent guest at the Bergfried. The condition was that the doctor haul the heavy items up to the keep with his own hands. He didn't need to be asked twice! Even if he did work up a bit of a sweat. It remained the talk of the town for a long time - the way he made his way through half of Saalfeld, greeting the onlookers along the roadside in a friendly manner.
